Survey on the Practice with Antifouling Coatings in Marinas of Lower Saxony
On behalf of the Lower Saxony Water Management, Coastal Defence and Nature Conservation Agency with allowance of the Ministry of Environment of Lower Saxony, LimnoMar conducted a survey for the practice with antifouling coatings in 2015.
In this project, questionnaires were sent to approx. 200 marinas, clubs, water authorities and public trade supervisions of Lower Saxony. The questions were focused on the cleaning process at the end of the season, removal and application of coatings on the marina ground, construction of washing areas, personal protection and environmentally responsible behavior. The responses will be evaluated with respect to the actual practice and recommendations will be published for leisure boat owners, clubs and marinas. Special guidance will be given how to improve the personal protection during maintenance work like cleaning, removal and application of coatings. The background for this survey were recent studies in Swedish marinas, which delivered evidence on poor maintenance practice resulting in serious contamination of soli and adjacent waters with antifouling biocides, heavy metals and harmful organic substances.
The ultimate aim of the German survey is an essential reduction of the contamination of soil and water simply by changing the practice of boat owners.
